OUR BELIEFS & EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
OUR BELIEFS…
Selah Scholars Homeschool Tutorial Statement of Faith
Everyone involved with Selah Scholars Homeschool Tutorial has a special opportunity to influence others for Christ. As Christ-following believers, all staff, tutors, and Selah leaders should agree to adhere to and follow the basic doctrinal beliefs of the Christian faith as specifically outlined in the Selah Scholars Statement of Faith:
THE BIBLE
The Bible is the infallible, inspired Word of God. (II Timothy 3:16-17, II Peter 1: 19-21, Revelation 22: 18-19)
GOD, JESUS, & THE HOLY SPIRIT
God is the creator of all things and manifests Himself in three distinct persons, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Gen. 1:1, Romans 1:7, Hebrews 1:8, Acts 5: 3-4)
God the Father is the infinitely perfect and eternally existing ruler, redeemer, and ultimate judge of the world. Deut. 4:39, I Ch. 29:12, Ps. 29:10
Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary. He lived on earth as fully God & fully (and perfect) man, was crucified and died for our sins, and rose on the third day. He ascended into heaven. He acts as our High Priest and advocates for us, His people. He will return. The only way to Heaven is through Him. (John 1:1, Romans 9:5, Matthew 1:18-25, I Peter 2:21-22, Hebrews 4:15, I Corinthians 15:3-4, Hebrews 10:12, Hebrews 10:21-22, I John 2:1, Matthew 24, 25:31-46, John 14:1-3, 6)
The Holy Spirit indwells, illuminates, directs, equips, and empowers believers through the power of Christ to live a godly life, in service of the Living God. (Ephesians1: 18-23)
SALVATION
Salvation is offered to all, but only benefits those who accept it through faith in Christ Jesus and it is complete and eternal. (Romans 1:16, John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8, Hebrews 5:9, John 10:26-30)
PRAYER
We believe in the power of prayer, both individual and corporate. (Matthew 7:7, Mark 11:24, John 14:13-14. Ephesians 6:18, Phillipians 4:6-7)
MARRIAGE
We believe that God created man and woman in his own image, different but with equal value in his eyes. (Genesis 1:26-28)
We believe God ordained marriage as a union between a man and a woman. (Genesis 2:18, Matthew 19:4-6)
GENDER
We believe that God loves and values everyone, male and female. He purposefully created males and females to fulfill different, but equal roles. Every person was created in His image and displays the glory of God. In His infinite wisdom, the God who does not make mistakes knew who each person would become. Males were created to be males and females were created to be females. Genesis 1:27 “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
CHILDREN
We are devoted to training our children in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6). We commit to teaching the children in our classes from a biblical worldview. (Deuteronomy 6:5-7)
UNITY
We believe in the spiritual unity of believers through our common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that individual doctrinal differences which may exist outside the aforementioned, should not hinder the unity of Christian home educators. (Romans 12:16, 14:19, Acts 4:32, 1 Peter 3:8)
FORGIVENESS
We believe that God loves and pursues mankind despite our rebellion and offers forgiveness, healing, and abundant life to anyone who turns to him. (Romans 5:8, John 3:17, 10:10, Titus 3:3-7)
OUR EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY…
A Charlotte Mason Inspired Education… The Charlotte Mason method is a teaching philosophy developed in England in the late 19th century by British educator Charlotte Mason.
We embrace these Charlotte Mason Philosophies:
Short lessons designed to teach & keep attention
Child-centered learning: children are unique individuals created in the image of God with a unique calling on their lives
Living books: High-quality literature that teaches children ideas through guided discovery–classics & modern “classics”
Nature study: Spending time outdoors exploring nature & bringing it indoors
Hands-on learning: Using real objects to teach ideas
Individuality: Respecting and nurturing each child's unique interests, abilities, and personality
Good habits: Developing habits of character, such as attention and effort (see page below)
Self-education: Enabling children to educate themselves by stimulating their curiosity and directing them to information–Love Learning
How it's taught:
Narration: Asking children to retell what they've read or heard in their own words instead of teaching to a test.
Nature: Spending time outside as well as bringing the outdoors in when possible. Nature teaches us about God’s orderly design, science, art, and more.
Journaling: Writing in a journal–both personal thoughts and observations, as well as quotes and Bible verses they love.
Dictation & Copywork: Copying short, meaningful passages to learn grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Physical Fitness: Incorporating daily walks, stretching, breathing exercises, dancing, singing, and games
Spreading the Feast (of subjects to explore): by offering a wide variety of topics, we give the student a chance to explore and find what they connect with most.
What it's not: rote memorization, excessive drills, and textbook learning.
